The application for Permanent Residence status does not grant the applicant such status. The applicant and his or her accompanying family members must continue to renew their Temporary Residence Visa’s until the outcome of the Permanent Residence application has been received.
It is important that the Permanent Residence is kept updated. The Director General can withdraw a Permanent Residence Permit if the holder has been absent from the Republic for more than three(3) years or has not taken up residence in the Republic within one(1) year of the issuance of such permit unless good reasons are provided showing good cause.
Upon issuance of the Permanent Residence Permit, the holder can apply for a South African Smart Identity Document as a non-citizen at the closest Department of Home Affairs office in person. This does not qualify the PR holder to apply for a South African passport unless the holder becomes a citizen of South Africa.
